Mom Hacks – Lunches

It’s summertime! Which means I have to pack lunches! Yay. (Insert sarcasm here)

I have to admit, packing lunches isn’t my favorite thing. Like, I try to be THAT Mom. You know, the one? The one who plans lunches 2 weeks in advance, meal preps, and has the cutest, most elaborate, and healthy lunches?

I am NOT that Mom. My kids aren’t open minded when it comes to food. My son isn’t as bad as my daughter, but their tastes are interesting.

My lunches, are functional, convenient, and the kids don’t complain about them, so i’m winning in my book.

I did want to share with you my experience with packing lunches. My son is easy to pack for. He doesn’t go bulldozing through a lunchbox for a snack, and can keep his food in decent condition. My daughter, not so much. But, she’s 5 so I will cut her some slack, because my son did the same when he was that age. So snack bags, and flimsy containers don’t really work for us.

Several years ago I was watching youtube, trying to be THAT mom, and came across Bento Boxes for kids! We’ve collected a few, and they’ve definitely held up, and serve their purpose.

I wanted to share with you the 2 Bento Boxes we are currently using.

The first one we have is called Bentgo. This luncbox is Legit. We have several of these and they’re definitely my favorite.

It has an insert which easily pops in and out for cleaning. It’s microwave & dishwasher safe (Mom Win!) They come in fun colors and I don’t have to worry about the kids demolishing their food since it’s got a hardshell case. There’s no mess because it leak proof, and it keeps all the food separated! We tend to reach for this one more for our daughter, because she’s very much a sandwich kid, and as long as you cut it in half it will fit in the large compartment.

Also, an added bonus they’re a supporte of Feed the Children! If you don’t know who they are, I would encourage you to check them out! http://www.feedthechildren.org/

The other Bento style lunchbox I have is Yumbox. This is one is really cutesy! I have the original style, which I am glad they revamped them because I do not go to this one as often. In my opinion, the compartments are too small, but if you have a grazing child who would rather have more options than this might work for you! But, the new ones look incredible and have the larger compartments that we need. If any of our bento boxes don’t survive then we will definitely be purchasing the new one! You can find it HERE.

So here’s the one we do have. This one has 6 compartments. The compartments are labeled. So if you’re like me, and you’re anal retentive, it will bother the crap out of you if you don’t have the appropriate food group in the labeled compartment.

This one won’t fit a sandwich in one compartment, but we do like this one for cold pasta, homemade Lunchables with crackers, and smaller portioned meals. I do like the visual reminder to keep the food groups balanced, and It’s lighter than the Bentgo.

For both boxes, I like that the inserts are interchangeable and you can order replacement pieces. They definitely last longer than any other food storage items we’ve used, so even though they’re more expensive we have had ours for 4 years so they’re more cost effective over time.

Bento boxes are convenient, and fun so I definitely recommend them! Do you use Bento style boxes? If so, what are your favorites? What are your kids favorite lunches?
